The Pete Conrad Spirit of Innovation Awards combine education, innovation and entrepreneurship by challenging high school students to design products using science and technology. The competition includes platforms in personal spaceflight, lunar exploration and renewable energy. Teams will compete for over $120,000 of prize money as well as the opportunities to connect with leading scientists, engineers, and entrepreneurs. The awards create a long term community for students and teachers and provides resources and opportunities to develop and incubate commercial products. Space Port Indiana is now working to create 5 teams for the competition throughout the State which is divided into 5 regions. The competition is just the beginning of this journey. Space Port Indiana™ has BlimpCam (full motion video) at Indiana State Fair and Launched Balloon from Midway on Friday August 15th as part of a program to bring more science to Indiana Hoosiers. The Indiana State Fair took yet another leap into science when it brought Space Port Indiana™ to the MIdway. During the Fair the Space Port launched a weather blimp with WiFI cameras in order to demonstrate the ability to observe and learn on a unique platform. WISH TV 8 sponsored "Weather Day" and covered the activities with Space Port Indiana™ and the balloon launch. You can see a brief movie of the launch at the Indiana State Fair by clicking here. It may take a moment to load (6mg).  IMAX has been a sponsor of many activities during Space Camp and at the Indiana State Fair for 2008. IMAX is a great sponsor and as part of our activities is offering free admission to the movie "Fly Me To The Moon 3D" for students on Saturdays and Sundays during the month of August as a celebration of science and Space Port Indiana™.

Space Port Indiana™ wrapped up its Space Camp 2008 August 8th and was a huge success. The Camp was filled to capacity with students aged 11-18 and focused on a variety of topics that would culminate in a successful launch of payloads. Speakers from NASA, Raytheon and TMGLabs (to name a few) brought unique insight and knowledge to students who didn't know what to expect on day one but didn't want to leave in the end. Model rockets, science experiments and a launch made it easy for students to understand what it takes to colonize, work and travel in an environment much different from here on Earth. The Columbus Republic and QMIX 107.3 both covered activities during the Camp and reported very positively on the week's events. Purdue College of Technology at Columbus, IMAX, The Indiana State Museum, Raytheon, and Indiana Space Grant Consortium were sponsors of this year's Camp and made immeasurable contributions to its success. The launch on August 8th took off at 1400 hrs and reached an altutude of 92733 feet landing in Madison Indiana. The payload consisted of cameras, video and other payloads created by the students. Camp participants tested batteries, plastics, foods and other materials to see what radiation and cold would have on different items. The success of the launch was directly tied to spending four days with students, teaching all the principles and practices before hand.
